The village has been inhabited since the beginning of the 1960s. According to residents’ narrations, the village was built either by the Venetians or by the Turks. But by a document of 1414 the village Raptis is Venetian and is disputed by Nikolaos Dandulo and Andreas Kalikas.
The way of life was traditional. For the construction of houses they have used natural materials (ax stones) from a nearby area. It seems as if time stopped in this village 40 years ago, since the settlement has stayed almost intact all these years. In other words, this settlement constitutes the linking element with an era that has left and seems that it will never come back.
Renovation of the buildings for visitors to stay, in combination with the benefits of Cretan diet constitute two important reasons to bring life back in this deserted settlement.
